Tewksbury is a town located on the uplands between the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, situated on slightly rollling lowland terrain, with large areas of bog and swamp here and there throughout the town. Tewksbury was settled during the early decades of the 18th century and its early economy was based on farming and grazing. The town's secondary work base was in lumbering, and a saw mill was built on Trull Brook in about 1736. In the early 19th century, the Lee family tannery was established, and it continued to operate throughout the century. Because of its proximity to Lowell, the economy of the town shifted toward commercial businesses, and that has remained the case to the present day.
Residents of Tewksbury developed greenhouses between 1890 and 1915, and grew primarily carnations for city markets. So many were grown that Tewksbury held the name of "carnation town" for years.
Tewksbury's convenient location along Routes 495 and 93, along with its many desirable residential family neighborhoods, have made this town a popular place to live.
